 Elect: Brian Newbold

Brian Newbold
Brian Newbold is a lifetime resident of the Fleetwood-Port Kells riding. “I learned to ride a bike in Fleetwood-Port Kells, attended my first day of school in Fleetwood-Port Kells, graduated high school in Fleetwood-Port Kells, went on my first date in Fleetwood-Port Kells and this is my opportunity to speak out for Fleetwood- Port Kells”

Brian believes that the top issues facing Fleetwood Port-Kells are immigration, transportation and crime.
“Fleetwood Port-Kells needs a new tool-kit. New immigrants need to be given the tools to become active and successful members of society. Residents need to be given the tools to reduce their carbon footprint through telecommuting, energy effieciency and effective public transit. The police department and justice system need to be given the tools to focus their resources on property crime and violent crime”
Brian completed a BSc in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University in 2007. During his time at university Brian was an active campaigner for student’s rights, organizing a committee to protest an unaffordable and unfair mandatory meal plan for SFU residents. Brian led a group of students to stage a 24 hour sit-in at the university residence office. This resulted in university administrators agreeing to change meal plan rules, saving students thousands of dollars.
“After my experience at SFU I became determined to have my voice heard. I learned that change won’t happen by itself and that we all need to speak up and pitch-in”
Brian currently works for the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as a Youth Programs Coordinator where he coordinates summer camps, youth events and birthday parties that teach kids about pet care, animal welfare and the environment. “My job is to help kids have a voice; our goal is to empower children to become advocates for animal welfare and the environment in their community.”
Brian’s personal interests include swimming, running, playing the guitar and spending time outdoors. His academic interests include animal welfare, sustainable food systems and applying the scientific method to political policy.
